RT and Street Teams, Oh My!

Okay, I know, I know, I should have a third thing in there to really make that title work, but it's what I've got.

So...RT. Where to start? I love RT. Anyone who knows me knows this. To anyone and everyone I met this year though, I need to issue an apology. There have been major personal issues going on during the lead-up to RT (and will continue for a while). This led to minimal sleep for a few weeks right before RT as I busted ass to get the house ready to put on the market (and stressed about it). It meant I was sleep-deprived before I even got there. Add in convention madness, and I was in hard-core space-cadet mode while there. So if you introduced yourself and I don't remember you. Or if I zoned out while talking, please forgive me. By next year there will be less drama and I can return to my normal state of absent-mindedness which is not nearly so...uh...bad. We'll just go with bad.

To that end, I'm not going to do the run down of who I spent time and had fun with because I had fun with everyone I interacted with...I just don't remember everyone's names. (I'll do a couple specifics, but they will be limited to less than a handful.)  In general though...

  • The Gaslamp Tea crew--xoxoxoxo I am so proud to be included in this group of amazing authors every year. Thank you!
  • Everyone at Entangled--you guys rock. I had so much fun hanging out with everyone. Thanks for taking the newbie in and making me feel at home (even if a couple of you looked at some of my costumes like I'd lost my mind :P)
  • The AWESOME book bloggers--I love you guys! You all made me smile more times than I care to count. And you also reminded me that when food wasn't handy...vodka is made from potatoes. ;-)
  • My Carina Press peeps--Thanks for the support and the silly conversations. And a specific thank you to Angela James for putting my fears to rest. I breathed a lot easier after that.
  • Katee Robert--thank you for NOT killing me in my sleep. My kids really appreciate it ;-)
  • Angie Fox--No Walking Dead spoilers...I promise! Thanks for a ridiculously late night of fun and conversation. It totally made my con.
  • Scalzi...I will never forget your face now. Though I may always introduce myself and say "What do you do?" You know, just for fun :P

I know I'm forgetting people, so please forgive me. I love far more people than are mentioned here. Some of you talked me down from my panic attacks. Others made me feel more beautiful than I have...ever. I love you all <3

That said... there was a vote going on Facebook over what to name my street team members. Renegades won! So I'm in the process of building a facebook group for the street team. This particular rebellion is in the infancy stages at the moment, but if you want in on the ground floor, go find The Renegades, do the secret knock, and I'll let you in as soon as we're up and running :)

I will be at Up in the Aether con next weekend (seriously, if you are in the Detroit area, please come by!), but after that, I'm going to build the group on Facebook and the snippets and fun and madness shall begin! If you aren't following the Entangled Group or my author page, please do that so you don't miss the announcements!

Hero Speed-Dating and What It's All About

Jeez. That title makes it sound like the hokey-pokey or something. Oh well.

For those of you who aren't aware, I'm one of the hosts for a couple reader panels at RT. First there's the Steampunk Tea that's going strong for several years now, but the second is a new one called Hero Speed-Dating.

Myself and five other brave authors (Diane Alberts, Saranna Dewylde, Jeffe Kennedy, Suzanne Lazear, & Katee Robert, to be precise) are going to talk about what we think about when we create our heroes. Sounds standard enough, but that's just the first few minutes... then the fun begins.

You see, we aren't just talking about our heroes, we're going to be our heroes for the rest of the panel. That's right! Each of us will be "posing" as one of our heroes for a round of group speed-dating. Readers will sit with each hero once as we pitch ourselves to them as prospective dates. If at the end of the pitch, they're interested in getting to know us further, they get to enter to win a "date" with the hero (a prize pack from the author).

Seriously, this should be the most ridiculous fun to be had while sober at RT Kansas City. I really hope to see you there!

NEWS! I Have News!

So I finally got the okay from my editor to announce this.

*blows trumpet*
*drum roll*

I have signed a three-book contract with Entangled Publishing's Brazen line! Yes, the line that brought you Katee Robert's Wrong Bed, Right Guy and Laura Kaye's One Night with a Hero will be giving you books from me too! Sexy books!

The series doesn't have a name yet, and I can't give any release information, but the first book in the series is tentatively called Seducing the Enemy and it's steamy. No, I mean it, there's an actual steam room in the book. :P

Seriously though, I'm super excited about this new venture, and I hope all of my loyal readers will follow me over to the Brazen side of life.

To that end, I'm probably going to be starting a street team at some point--maybe soon since Gaming for Keeps comes out in the near future. So if you love me and want to help out, please send an email with the subject line "Street Team Volunteer!" to selestedelaney@gmail.com

That's it for now. I'm hoping to have more awesome news to share soon, but in the meantime, please feel free to happy dance with me. As always, rhythm is optional. And with Brazen, so are clothes :P

Next Big Thing

I was actually tagged by Katee Robert back in mid-December, but with the death-plague and holidays, I decided to wait until now because I'm just a rebel like that.

The book I'm using for this is the first in my new series with Entangled Publishing.

What is your working title of your book?
Gaming for Keeps, and I just found out that we're keeping the title. Yay!

Where did the idea come from for the book?
This manuscript was written specifically for Entangled's “Geek Collection” call. From there, I started thinking about when I used to play EverQuest and the drama and fun had with my guildies. The idea kind of took hold from there.

What genre does your book fall under?
It’s kind of a romantic suspense. Sort of. Imagine Chuck meets DragonCon with lots of sexy thrown in for fun.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Our hero, Cal, would be played by Garrett Hedlund of Tron: Legacy and Country Strong fame (gotta love a man who can sing). And our heroine spitfire would be the lovely Amber Tamblyn from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, House, and a whole bunch of other things.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
TRAIT agent Cal Burrows just wants to spend the weekend with his new girl, Penelope, at ConDamned, but a terrorist with a taste for the dramatic puts his job as well as their lives and budding romance at risk.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?
It was written for the submission call, but it was truly inspired by my love for quirky-straddling-the-right-and-wrong-sides-of-the-law shows like Chuck, Leverage, and White Collar. With a little bit of The Avengers (minus the super-powers) thrown in. But the basic idea at its core was inspired by my guildies who taught me that a game could be more than just a game.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Gaming for Keeps is contracted with Entangled Publishing and will be released as part of their Geek Collection in September.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
The first draft? A month? It’s a novella, so that’s not at all unreasonable. Then it went to my crit partners and through some significant revisions before I ever sent it in.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I am so bad at this. I really don’t have specific books within the genre that fit both the type of story as well as my voice. So… Voice and stylistically, my work has been compared to Katee Robert's and Allison Pang's, but for story content, I still refer back to Chuck and Leverage.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
TRAIT itself is a construct of my imagination created for this book. It’s an intelligence agency composed of the rejects (though I prefer the term misfits) who didn’t make the cut for the better known agencies but were too valuable to let go. The team is full of quirks and different from your average spy network. For example, Cal is a computer genius with… we’ll call it severe anger-management issues when things get ugly.

From the inception of the agency, it was almost inevitable that a series would spring up, and I’m currently working on another story in the same world and featuring a couple of the TRAIT agents introduced in Gaming for Keeps.

Now onto the next victims! The only downside is that I can't hear the screaming through the internet:

First up is Graylin Fox.

And next is M. Andrew Patterson.

Have fun!

I'm Beautiful

Excuse the wonky-ass formatting of this post. I don't know what happened.

My perennial stabbing victim, Andrew Patterson, decided to give me an "award". While I appreciate that he thinks I'm beautiful (*fluffs hair*), there will be a random stabbing in his future over this. Which is probably exactly why he did it. He says he doesn't like the stabbings, but they will continue until morale improves, damn it.

And now I have to do things. I'm supposed to do them in groups of seven, but I'm a non-conformist and it's my damn blog, so I'll do however many I please :P

The last 7 lines (it was really 8 lines/10 sentences but whatever) I wrote (in first draft glory--and the end will be changing later tonight, so...)
But eventually my leather skirt’s grip on the saddle started to slide and Bessie moved faster than I could keep up with. I tumbled over the side of the bull, miraculously landing on my ass, only to have the machine whack me in the back of the head as it finished its turn. Pain mushroomed in my skull and I gripped my head with both hands.
There’s pain and there’s being-bonked-in-the-head-by-a-mechanical-bull pain. It felt like something popped in my head and my brain was actually screaming inside me. The world went black for a second or two. The only reason I know it wasn’t longer is bootsteps were just rushing toward me when things came into focus again.
I couldn’t breathe. This wasn’t some flicker—there and gone again. And it wasn’t one.

The last 7 songs listened to
What the... I don't know. Instead, I'm going to give you the seven most played on my iTunes.
     1. "Rattlesnake Smile" by Christian Kane
     2. "The Sound of Madness" by Shinedown
     3. "Whataya Want from Me" by Adam Lambert
     4. "Breaking Inside" by Shinedown
     5. "For Your Entertainment" by Adam Lambert
     6. "Anything's Better Than Feeling the Blues" by Martina McBride
     7.  "Breathe Today" by Flyleaf

The last 7 books I read
Uh... I don't remember, so I'm doing this my way
  1. (Currently reading) Velveteen by Danny Marks
  2. (Currently reading) Blackwood by Gwenda Bond
  3. The Marriage Bargain by Jennifer Probst <3
  4. Professor Gargoyle (Tales from Lovecraft Middle School) by Charles Gilman
  5. Wrong Bed, Right Guy by Katee Robert <3
  6. (Next up) The Angel by Tiffany Reisz
  7. (Next up) Try Me by Diane Alberts
Seven favorite movies
Oh hell no. I have too many. I'm just going to list four recent ones I loved
  1. The Avengers (*happy sigh*)
  2. Cabin in the Woods (seriously, I love Joss Whedon)
  3. The Amazing Spiderman (though I could have done without the thousands of spiders--wasn't one enough?)
  4. Sherlock Holmes 1 & 2 (RDJ--it needs no other explanation than that)
  5. X-Men: First Class (Fassbender as Magneto--totally rooting for the bad guys)
  6. Star Trek (I don't care that they fucked with canon. I LOVED this movie)
  7. Tangled (Don't pretend you don't have it bad for Flynn Ryder too. You know you do--it's the smolder)

Seven favorite authors
Nope. Just going with authors whose work I love. If I missed someone, I apologize, but I may space and not include a "favorite" because there are too many I enjoy.
  1. Kelley Armstrong (always)
  2. Tiffany Reisz
  3. Katee Robert
  4. Skyla Dawn Cameron (Not sucking up to my editor, I just love her work)
  5. Kady Cross
  6. Allison Pang
  7. Hannah Moskowitz

Seven songs that are significant to my stories
What the...? See the list up there where I did most played? That would be because they are on more than one of my playlists. So, instead, i'm going to do musical artists whose work is often significant to my stories.
  1. Shinedown
  2. Adam Lambert
  3. Daughtry
  4. Miranda Lambert
  5. Christian Kane
  6. David Cook
  7. Paramore

And seven more people upon whom I will bestow this "award"!

Yay! Victim time!

  1. Katee Robert
  2. Suzanne Lazear
  3. Angela Addams
  4. Danielle LaPaglia
  5. DB Reynolds
  6. Lola Drake
  7. Ella Grey

From the Editing Cave: Clockwork Mafia

Hi all! *wipes sweat from brow* First round edits for Clockwork Mafia have arrived and I'm trying to bust my butt on these changes so I can get them turned in before I take off to visit my friend Dani in Canada <3

To that end, I don't have a blog post of brilliance today. (Please refrain from pointing out all the non-brilliant posts to date. Thanks.) I will let you know that I'm going to be at Steamed! on Friday, and I did a review of Queen of Swords by my crit partner, Katee Robert. You should all rush out to get that. Like now. Here's an Amazon link. Oh, and one for Barnes & Noble. I'm also doing a rant at Writings of a Wicked Book Addict TOMORROW! (There's my post of brilliance, or at least ranty-goodness.)

So for here, since I'm knee-deep in the mind of Henrietta Mason, I'm just going to give you a little video of a song that always reminds me of her. I know the point behind the song is supposed to be one of strength, but for some reason, when I hear it, all I hear is pain--and that fits where Henri's at.

Video from Youtube, all rights belong to Miranda Lambert and Sony
(Also, if you like her music, get the album here.)

RT Madness

See? Katee Robert & I *are* different people
If you saw my RT schedule, you know that it was shaping up to be a crazy convention. I may have over-extended myself a teeny bit. Maybe. Hell, I'm probably going to do the same thing next year (minus the photo shoot). Someone just remind me of two things next year:

  1. Pace myself because Saturday night is a long way away.
  2. If I plan on drinking a lot, do not (under any circumstances) mix vodka and rum. I should know this by now, but I always seem to forget.

Having said that, I had a fabulous time. I'm going to do a longer wrap-up for Wicked Lil Pixie, but some highlights of the week:

  • Katee Robert. Oh, Lady Soulmate, I had such a good time with you and miss you already. Thanks for putting up with me and my bouts of insanity.
  • Aussie dinner. Not only did I share a table with Rebecca York, I shared a cab back to the hotel with Ann Aguirre (and a pissy-ass cab driver, but more on this at Pixie's). It's such an honor that Megan and Jennifer thought enough of me to include me with such an incredible group of authors. I still get fan-girl shivers thinking about it.
  • My first panel... ever... anywhere. I was absolutely terrified, but with the fabulous group of women I had there with me, it wasn't nearly as panic-inducing as it could have been and thankfully people seemed to find it really informative. (I ran into a couple women who had attended at the end of the week and they were still debating whether or not to use pen names. I'm calling that a win :) )
  • The Gaslamp Gathering. ALWAYS a good time. So many costumes! <3 <3 <3
  • The Atrium. If you don't know what that means, you really should have stuck around after the bar closed on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday :P Good times. Thanks, people!
  • Angela James telling me to "Calm down and get a drink" at the Carina Press author party. Thanks, Angela, talking to you that night helped me mellow out for the remainder of the convention :)
  • Meeting James Rollins at the FanTastic Day Party (where I was supposed to be schmoozing). There is a story here involving the wonderful Deanna Wadsworth, but I'm saving that for Pixie's too (just to embarrass her in front of a bigger audience :P)
  • The Harlequin Dance Party and Damon Suede. First, I've never seen the dance floor at RT that full before <3 Second, Damon, you are absolutely fabulous and I totally want to write M/M now because of you. (Still terrified that I can't do it justice, but I think I'm going to try. *gulp*)

Low point of the week? Finding out I was so tired at lunch on Sunday that I totally missed it as Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) walked right in front of my freaking table. Trying to see it from the perspective of that just meaning RT was one hell of a party, but... *sad sigh*

That's it for now. And as a send off, Katee Robert's new (temporary) theme song:

Searching for Seleste...

This is going to be a rather long, rambly post--possibly with a good deal of cursing. If you don't feel like actually reading it, I understand. If you want to be able to pretend you did, give me virtual hugs on facebook and commend me for my effective use of Firefly quotes.

Those of you who want to stick around, you might want to grab a chair (who am I kidding... only crazy people read on those treadmill desks).

Some of you have known me for most of my life. Others for several years. And others barely know me at all. But those who have known me from any time before 2011 have been well aware of... changes in my personality. Over the summer last year, I blogged about my battle with depression, so that isn't really news. The fact that I'm still fighting it might be, and I've recently started to pull out of things enough to take a good hard look at what sent me into the brain-chemistry spiral-of-doom.

Short version for those of you bored already is this--I took some major self-esteem hits and the after-effects trickled into everything. Shit started to spiral like a whirlpool and sucked me down into the deep. Once I was down there, part of me decided drowning was easier.

Long version for the rest of you...

About a year ago, great things were happening, I was on top of the world. Sure there were little things going wrong (when aren't there?), but overall things were good. Then, in about a 2-3 month period of time, several things happened that knocked me down hard. We're talking blows to my self-esteem like I haven't dealt with since elementary school (and for those who have known me "forever," you know that was a pretty severe low point in my life confidence-wise). Can I sit here an pin-point exactly what those things were? Some of them, but not all, and I really don't want to re-hash them to be quite honest. Plus, the ones I do remember came from friends, and I'm not going to throw people under the bus. (I'm prefer to assume that they didn't go in with horrid intentions. Sure, it's possible, but I prefer to think better of people than that. So for my own well being, I'm going to pretend they meant well.)

But in each of those particular cases, the stuff that was said or done made me start to question pretty much every fucking aspect of my life. This isn't just about the writing. We're talking writing, appearance, family, friends, children. And what little wasn't directly under fire soon came into question as the spiral of doom sucked me down.

I didn't just worry about the book I was writing, I worried about the ones that were out. The ones I hadn't written yet. I worried about the non-writing things that I was doing that could be detrimental to my career.

Had it just been that, I think I would have been okay. After all, I liked a good chunk of the stuff I was writing at the time. But because of some of it, I questioned every friendship I had. Not only from the perspective of whether or not they actually were my friends, but even more whether or not I deserved friends... at all. I started to believe that I was this horrible person.

Thankfully, my kids are out of the "mommy, I hate you" stage, because they and my husband (even though I questioned their love at every turn) were one of the big things that kept me from drowning when this first got out of control. They kept me marginally sane, but I still spent every day questioning every friend, every conversation, every word, every decision.

How would it affect my friendship? My marriage? My career? My sanity?

I started drifting away from social media. I posted less, and what I did post wasn't me. It was this shell that all my questions had left behind after I reached the conclusion that I was too abrasive, too loud, too snarky, too brash... too everything. Friends who I used to talk to every day were almost avoided out of fear. Fear that they'd notice the changes and not want to stick around. Fear that they'd prefer me this way. Fear they wouldn't notice at all.

Quite frankly, I'm surprised a lot of people didn't just take their toys and go home. I mean, quite frankly, I wasn't any fucking fun anymore. But most of them stuck around. A few even stuck by me hard-core. And those are the friendships that have helped slowly pull me out of this dark place. The funny part is I didn't even realize how far I'd gone until a few days ago when I said something (I don't remember what it was, but I do remember wondering if I should say it) on Twitter, and Nat (Wicked Lil Pixie) said something to the effect of "You sound more like you."

It was like a slap in the face--the good kind.

For the first time, I looked at what I'd been doing for the past year, because I knew it had been going on that long, even if it hadn't shown at first. What I realized was those self-doubts, those hits that had made me question everything, had turned me into someone who played it safe. I stopped balancing on that high-wire that separates too-much from not-enough and jumped into the net on the not-enough side. It was safe there. Nobody gets offended by the person who avoids pushing buttons.

The problem is nobody really gives a shit about them either. I'd made myself invisible to everyone but the people who really cared about me. And I'm pretty damn sure every single one of them was well-aware that I haven't been me in a long time. And more than my author photos with the ample cleavage, more than my semi-outrageous behavior at conventions, more than any snarky, borderline offensive thing I could say online, THAT would be what killed my career.

A year ago (and longer than that), I prided myself on the fact that I was always "me" online. What you saw was what you got. No reservations (other than not identifying my kids). When I tried to become a "good girl" who "followed the rules" and "did what I'm supposed to," I killed that fun, free part of me. And really? It sucked. Every. Single. Thing. About. It. Sucked. Ass.

I don't want to be her. She's a boring bitch. She complains, but she's never funny about it. All she does is work. And it feels like work.

I remember writing where it felt like freedom and truth and what I imagine being high feels like. I miss it.

I remember talking on Twitter and saying whatever crazy thing came to mind. Not that I mind doing that while chatting with Katee, but I miss doing it with everyone else.

On my website it says my motto is "No worries, no regrets." I fucked up and forgot that for too long. I don't want to be safe anymore... I want to be me again. For better or worse.

So, I'm not there yet, but I'm working on it. I just need to remember how to be me again because I seem to have forgotten a little bit. On the other hand, I know what the problem is, and that means I can kick it's fucking ass because "Knowing is half the battle." (Yes, I went with the G.I. Joe quote. It'll help me identify the people who didn't bother reading this shit. Because that's how I roll :P)

And to my husband, my kids, and my friends who have stood by and not let me completely forget who I am... thank you. From the deepest, blackest recesses of my soul, thank you. There is a special spot in hell reserved for people like you--namely the head table at my debutante ball. I <3 each and every one of you.
