Give a Reader a Reader

It's that time of year when everyone starts saying to themselves, "What can I buy for X?" (X of course being the algebraic equivalent of whichever given friend you can never buy for.) This year Decadent Publishing is helping you out with Give a Reader a Reader. AND, you don't only get a Nook to give a friend, you also win 45 books for your friend AND you. How awesome is that?

But, you say, the odds are so not in favor of me winning that. So I'm here to sweeten the pot. I'm going to post a freebie holiday short below, and by answering the question in the Rafflecopter correctly (it's an easy question if you read the freebie), you're entered to win a copy of either Of Course I Try (which is one of the books on the Nook--list of awesome books and authors below--so if you win the Nook, don't pick this one :P) or it's sequel The Ghost of Vampire Present. Vampire smexiness! (If you already own both, we'll figure out an alternate prize.)
***Click here for a list of all the blogs participating.***

So, without further ado, I give you a story about one even made Max... Max. Every character has a history, and every once in a while, a special holiday gift is involved.

CHRISTMAS IN CHAINS (A Blood Kissed Story)
Since becoming a vampire, especially since I was brought here, time has little meaning. Christmas, however, always brings a special surprise.
The first year of my imprisonment, hot pokers were driven into my flesh so I would understand what my victims felt if I didn’t glamour them when I fed. The lesson repeated the next year, along with my first bath in holy water—in case the first time didn’t convince me to be kind unless there was cause to be cruel. The next year, I spent Christmas day chained in the garden, just within the shadow of its walls, where the sun could sear my flesh without destroying it so I would remember that no matter how strong I think I am, there’s always something stronger.
It was by those memories I counted the years here. A dozen so far, and judging by the decorations draped luridly about the place, number thirteen was fast approaching. I gave up begging for release after the first five years. Now I alternated between hoping to survive and praying for death.
Today, I leaned toward the former. I wanted to live…just not here. Not anymore.
There were no more lessons I could learn. Even if there were, I didn’t want those answers. I had enough nightmares to last me several centuries.
The stones of the hearth bit into my bare knees as I scrubbed at the marble inside the fireplace.
Silver chains clinked at my wrists and ankles. Resting on my heels, I wiped the back of my hand across my forehead.
“You missed a spot.” Remus’s voice grated on the last of my frayed nerves.
Snapping would do no good though, especially not with Christmas and my annual “gift” right around the corner. So I choked on the retort and clenched my shackled hands into fists, trying to calm myself. “Where?”
“Don’t growl at me, Maxmillian. To your left.”
A faint smudge of soot marred the very edge of the marble. Movements rough, I scrubbed at the spot until it disappeared. “Is that all, Remus?”
“I’m tired of talking to your back. Turn around.”
As always, the order, issued with complete calm, made me bristle. Part of me wanted to defy him, but my back still stung from the last time he’d reminded me who was in charge. So I turned and stared brazenly at him. I’d tried playing the whipped puppy; it didn’t get me anything, so I didn’t bother anymore.
Remus lounged on a red velvet couch, his robe gaping open to reveal flawless pale skin. I knew he thought it made him look irresistible. I resisted anyway. And I never found it all that difficult. He twirled a finger in his hair, looking almost coy for a moment. I must not have responded the way he planned, because he sighed and lay back on the couch. “I’m chilled. Start a fire, would you?” He turned toward me, his gaze even.
I tried to stay calm, but my muscles bunched. And my captor simply smiled at me. Of course he would notice. He always noticed. “You just had me clean the fireplace, Remus.”
He waved a hand lazily. “Yes, and now I want a fire. Build it and you can be free for the evening.”
All I wanted to do was race across the room and sever his head from his shoulders, but I knew better than to try that again. The next time I tried to kill Remus, he couldn’t see it coming or I’d fail. “Right away.”
I built the fire and had it blazing in minutes. Then he had his guards take me below ground and chain me to the ceiling. “Enjoy your Christmas Eve,” one of them growled as he yanked the chains over my head and stalked out, slamming the door and leaving me with only the light of the moon filtering through the barred window.
This was my reward. Not freedom by any standards I used to know, but I was away from Remus for a few blessed hours. Sometimes that was enough. Straining against my bonds, I could just see the moon outside my cell. A connection to the outside world—tenuous though it was—like a cruel lover, disappearing when I needed her touch most.
My muscles taut and trembling with the agony, I muttered prayers as I did every moment I spent alone—for life, for the lives I’d taken, for release, for death, for the death of Remus, and for the ability to kill him myself.
“I cannot help you with the killing, but I can get you out of here.”
The tiny voice in my right ear jerked me from my meditation, my arms screaming as I stood upright. “Who? What?”
The voice by my ear laughed and in a flurry of wings revealed itself as a shadow in the moonlight. “I am Janiqua, and I can spring you from this prison, Vampire, but you will owe me a favor in return.” She fluttered back to land on my arm, barely five inches tall, with brown hair and dragonfly wings that glittered in the pale light.
As much as I wanted to jump at the offer, I had a hard time believing I wasn’t hallucinating from pain and exhaustion. “What sort of favor?”
She shrugged, more a movement of wings than shoulders. “I don’t know. That’s why you’ll have to owe me. Do we have an accord?”
I’d long since given up hope of Christmas miracles, but I nodded. In an instant, the shackles opened and my arms fell heavily by my sides, forcing me to stifle a groan of exquisite pain. She darted under the door, and soon enough it swung wide.
“Quickly, Vampire. The guards won’t stay asleep for long.” She flitted up the stairs. I raced after her, rubbing my wrists. The guards were indeed asleep at their posts, and I dashed out the front door.
I didn’t question my good fortune until I stood shivering at the gates of the estate. “Janiqua?” I called as she fluttered into the night. “How did you find me? And why the hell did you help me?”
Her pointy teeth flashed in the light of the moon as she darted close to my ear. “I like people being in my debt, Vampire.” She flitted away and called back over her shoulder, “As to who sent me? Consider it a Christmas present from your Fairy Godmother.” Her laughter echoed in the night as she flew away.
After that, I did the only reasonable thing—put as much distance between myself and Remus’s estate as I could before dawn lit the sky, savoring my Christmas miracle and plotting my vengeance with every step.

Below is the Rafflecopter for the big giveaway.
Your question for entry here is: What is the name of the character keeping Max captive?

Who is Spencer Pierce?

When I set out to create my characters, I usually have a pretty good idea of the type of person they are and what they look like. Backstory and quirks and that sort of thing are where the real work comes in. But the basics usually fall into my head fully formed. That was definitely the case with Spencer Pierce, captain of the Dark Hawk in Badlands.

The first thing about Spence is that he isn’t a big guy: muscular and strong sure, but more on the skinny side (wiry is the nice way of putting it). And then there are his eyes. Spencer’s eyes are one of his most telling features. No matter what kind of front he puts on for anyone, his eyes are haunted and speak of a past he’d rather forget. Right around the time I was “casting” Spencer, White Collar came on TV. Matt Bomer fit in a lot of ways, but he just didn’t have that dark edge I wanted for Spencer—he was too “cute”. It didn’t take long to realize the guy I kept seeing when I pictured Spencer wasn’t playing a nice guy on TV. He was playing one of the most deliciously sarcastic and bloodthirsty vampires on TV. Ian Somerhalder is very much the physical embodiment of Spencer Pierce. Of course, if they ever made a movie of Badlands, he’d have to bring a haunted past to the character of a really nice guy. Is he that good of an actor? Hmm…

But as for the character, that’s all Spencer. The closest thing in most of my TV/movie watching to a dirigible captain are from science fiction, in particular spaceship captains give the best parallel. But if you look at most of them, you’ll see some trends.

-       Star Trek

  • Kirk is a devil-may-care ladies’ man. (So very not Spencer)

  • Picard is straight-arrow, proper and…yeah (Love him, but not Spencer)

  • Janeway’s uh…a girl (honestly, this is when I got bored with Star Trek and stopped watching)

-       Star Wars

  • Han Solo is a smuggler and a cad. Sure he turns into a great guy, but he starts out as kind of a jerk (Not Spencer)

  • Lando Calrissian takes us right back to Kirk.

Sigh. Spencer’s his own breed of guy. But then I thought, what about someone who’s close? Surely one of those captains would be able to sit down and have a drink with Spence without trying to rob him, kill him, or take his woman. Not really. The only ones who wouldn’t probably wouldn’t have a drink with him in the first place.

I could think of one guy who would though. Sure, he’s a smuggler and he’s got attitude to spare. However, he’s not the kind to start off with aggression nor is he the kind to shit on a fair deal. So, if you recognize a little bit of Malcolm Reynolds in Spencer, there’s a reason for it. They aren’t the same character by a long stretch, but I like to think they’d get each other and maybe even be friends.

In addition to the contest that is going on with this post as part of the treasure hunt for The Romance Studio, I'm also offering a digital copy of either of my Blood Kissed stories to a random commenter here (winner's choice of Of Course I Try or The Ghost of Vampire Present).

Introducing Tuesday Teases!

Those weekly updates really weren't doing much for me, so I decided to change up what happens on the first blog post of the week, so welcome to Tuesday Teases! This is kind of a catch-all day of fun stuff: author interviews, polls, teasers from my stories, maybe even some man-candy. I really hope you enjoy the change; I'm definitely excited :)

For this week, I'm going to start simple. A lot of you come to the blog directly from Twitter, or Facebook, or other internet links. Hell, there are even a few of you who pop here all on your own without any linkage from me. All of that is made of win and I love you for it, but it means that you probably aren't hitting the main site for content. And that means you all missed the excerpt I posted from "Of Course I Try".

So I'm going to give it to you here!

WARNING: This excerpt is for mature audiences only (or at least those over 18). If your boss reads over your shoulder, it's probably not safe for work.

When I came to his house tonight, I'd come to say goodbye. I remember that, even as his hands cup my breasts, squeezing them tenderly and rolling my nipples between his fingers. By the time Max lowers his head and sucks one tightened bud into his mouth, I can't recall why I wanted to leave.

Candles and patchouli incense burn in the room as my body writhes against sage sheets so soft they feel like silk. They aren't, though. I know his silk sheets—they’re black. The low light and spicy scent play on my senses, intoxicating me until the room disappears.

All I know are his hands and mouth on my body. Rough and soft. Dry and wet. Cool and warm.

His lips cover mine, and I give myself to the kiss as he reaches down and tugs off my panties. I'm wearing the lace ones. I'd come to say goodbye wearing the black lace panties he loves. But by the time they're gone, I don't consider why I'd do something like that because Max's mouth has left mine and traced a line down my abdomen.

I know I should fight this, but I can't. I don't want to. I want Max—for as long as he'll have me.

Rough hands cup my ass as he wedges my legs apart with his shoulders. Then despite, or maybe because of, the little moans that betray me, his lips travel lower, trailing kisses down to the inside of my thigh. His breath tickles as he hovers there, reaching out his tongue to trace a shape on my skin. It's a heart. I don't know how I know, but I'm sure.

"Please, Max—" A little voice in my head screams that I should finish the sentence with "stop", but I don't. I can't.

A deep chuckle vibrates against my clitoris, making a shiver run all the way to my toes. Then his magical tongue caresses the already sensitive nub, and I cry out. He sucks it into his mouth just to the line where pain and pleasure meet—treading it but never crossing over.

I'm helpless beneath him, a prisoner to my body's yearnings. My back arches off the relative safety of the bed, and Max takes full advantage. With the ease of years of practice, his hands slide beneath me, pulling me closer to him as his tongue delves into me.

I can't think anymore. I can only feel. The pressure of his hands on my ass. The silky motion of his tongue inside me. The rough grazing of his teeth.

My hands clutch at the soft, green sheets and ball them in my fists as pleasure rips through me. I've never experienced orgasms like this with anyone else. Only Max. Wave after wave of sensation as my muscles contract around his tongue. It's never stopped moving, never stopped drawing me to my peak.

I cry out his name. The only word that matters. Max.

Soon enough, I can't even feel. Then there is nothing.

When I wake in the morning, everything is hazy. I remember coming over, remember the sex. The incredible, mind-altering sex, but then I'm blank. It isn't the first time.

There's a note on the pillow next to me.

Jocelyn,

I'm glad you came back. You have no idea how much I missed you.

Love forever,

Max

Something clicks in my brain, and I realize it isn't the first time I've read those words either.

Launch Party!

So, I kind of promised a giveaway a while back. Things got crazy and I kept putting it off. But I signed contracts with two publishers this summer, and that deserves a celebration. So I thought there was no better time to start it than the eve of my first sale going live for Decadent Publishing's launch. Yes, people, it's tomorrow. Go to www.decadentpublishing.com and buy my story. Or buy someone else's story. Hell, buy a lot of stories!

In fact, I'll give you a little incentive to buy. I've got a couple good old-fashioned paper books to give away.

First up, from the woman ultimately behind me becoming a published author, I give you...

.

A signed copy of Made to Be Broken by the wonderful Kelley Armstrong.

.

.

Next up, early this year, I needed a book to break me out of my reading funk. This one did it.

.

A signed copy of Happy Hour of the Damned by Mark Henry.

.

.

If these were digital copies, I could send them anywhere, but as of right now, I don't have the cash to mail physical books wherever I please, so I need to limit this contest to residents of the US and Canada. I love the rest of the world too, but shipping is just insane.

.

So, to win one of these lovely books, there are a couple things you can do.

1) Comment. Simple, I like comments. They make me happy. So tell me something fabulous that will make me smile. It can be anything from a funny story to a great joke to which Decadent release you can't wait to read. (Worth 1 entry)

2) Buy my story from Decadent. Send me a copy of your receipt at selestedelaney(at)gmail(dot)com (thanks, Laura, for reminding me I needed to put that in here). At this point, I'm flying a little blind, but based on my own previous e-book purchases, it should say what you bought on it. (Worth 3 entries -- because it's my blog and I can do that :P)

3) Buy any other stories from Decadent. Same deal with the receipt. (Worth 1 entry for every title purchased.)

.

I'd love for you to tweet, facebook, etc about the contest, but I'm not sure how to keep track of all that, so it won't get you anymore entries. It will, however, get you my deepest appreciation :)

.

I'll let this run until Friday, August 20 and announce the winners in the post on Saturday the 21st. First winner drawn gets their choice of titles, second winner gets the remaining book.

So, get to commenting and shopping, and let the game begin :)

Revision Hell?

After holding my breath waiting for edits to come on "Of Course I Try", they came Friday afternoon just a few hours before we were due to leave for vacation. Needless to say, I opened the file with my nerves strung more than a little tight. My kids were going nutty, and since it was a short, I really wanted to get the revisions done before we left.

I had three hours.

Eep.

But I opened the file and dove in. Here's what I learned from this first foray into working with an editor on revisions (keep in mind, this was a short story and I wasn't asked to make any story changes):

-       Do the easy stuff first. If they changed your punctuation or mention that it's (no I didn't do this, it's just an example) bated breath, not baited breath, those are easy things to accept or reject. Getting these things off the edge will dramatically decrease the amount of work staring you in the face.

-       Word repetition. In this particular story, there were a few of them done for effect, and I thought my uber-betas had caught the rest, but my editor, Kate, found a bunch more. She said I could leave them if I really wanted them, but I think I only left one. The rest were easy enough to tweak, and that slashed a bunch more work.

-       By this point, I was left with the bigger things. (Which in this case weren't huge. I mean it's only a short story.) Those got tackled one at a time.

-       Then I went back and gave it another read-through and filled in a couple places where I'd felt something was missing.

Done. That was it. Patient and methodical got me through the revisions in time to answer Kate's question about one thing I'd left that confused her and still leave on time for vacation.

I'm not delusional, really. I know that revisions won't always be this easy, but all things considered it wasn't a bad experience at all, even with the crazy time frame. In fact, even knowing the next one is a longer piece that will probably need more intensive work, I'm looking forward to my next editorial experience.

So, revision hell? Not so much.

Either that or it just brings out my demonic side and makes me feel right at home.

Weekly Update: July 5, 2010

I know, I know, I just showed you the cover for my short yesterday, but I'm going to do it again just because I love it so much.

There, that makes the blog all nice and pretty.

Anyway, I don't have edits for anything yet.

BUT (and I do love a nice butt -- er just ignore that)... I did get a likely release date for "Of Course I Try". Lisa from Decadent Publishing let me know this morning that they are planning on the short as part of launch day. Yes, that's right, I get to be part of day one team! I am super geeked and can't wait to find out what else is coming out so I can share that news with you as well.

When is launch day? Oh, yeah, you might need to know that. "Of Course I Try" will be released on August 1. Yes, people, less than a month away!

Want to be excited with me now?

News! And a cover!

I recently revised and submitted this old short story I had in my files. The problem (as I so often have) is it was too romancey for a lot of markets, but I wasn’t sure it would be romancey enough for others. The thing was it had romance, but again, not the lovey-dovey variety. It wasn’t a pretty story. It’s harsh — some might even say dark. (Okay, yeah, it’s dark :P)

When I first wrote it, “Of Course I Try” clocked in at somewhere under 1300 words. It was super short, but I wrote it for a challenge with a 1500 word cap. The revision brought it up to just under 2k.

I got a response from the e-publisher I'd selected to sub to the same day I sent it in. They liked it, but it was too short. Did I have a longer (5k+) version? I didn’t, but I emailed back that I’d work on it. That was Friday. I spent that night and the next developing the story, adding some history and the entire thing more depth. At first, I was nervous. I liked the original story. It was tight and fast and had a very high tension level. But when I was done, I realized that while the original worked on one level, the new version gave so much more.

Then again, I still wasn’t sure how other people would feel about it. I sent it to a couple beta readers who were speedy and awesome (Thanks PJ & Janelle!).  So, Monday rolled around, and I had a shiny new version of the story (5600 words) and a longer synopsis. I sent it wondering if I’d just wasted my weekend.

Monday night I got a response along the lines of “great story”, but there was no contract or deal attached. I stared at it for a long time trying to figure out what it meant. I lasted until the next day when I sent an email asking if that meant they wanted it — LOL. The answer came back as a yes, and I started filling out the contract and paperwork immediately. Everything was sent in Wednesday.

I’m happy to say that not only has Decadent Publishing acquired “Of Course I Try”, but I even have cover art to share with you! Dara managed to capture Max almost like she stepped into my brain and snapped a picture.

I want to thank Lisa, Heather, and (the super-speedy) Dara. This is a great opportunity and I get to be published alongside some really good friends. I can’t wait for the August first launch.

And before you ask, I don’t have a release date for the story yet. Though if Lisa or Heather happen in here, maybe they could help with that.
